Amanda Ammirati-O’Shea, LCSW

Comprehensive Psychotherapist

Amanda Ammirati-O'Shea

Are you navigating through one of life’s many transitions? Perhaps experiencing some symptoms of anxiety or depression, racing thoughts, a lack of motivation, self-sabotage or isolation? Are you stressed or overwhelmed and wondering if you should talk to someone about it?

I can guarantee you that there is no “right” time, reason or explanation to start seeing a therapist, but you’re here now and I am so glad you are.

I use an eclectic approach to tailor therapy to each individual’s identified needs by combining self-reflection, mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), psychodynamic psychotherapy and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) approaches. Such needs include but are not limited to depression, anxiety, various life transitions, chronic stress, family discord, trauma, self-esteem, and early childhood experiences that may impact one’s current functioning. We naturally have defenses that protect us during times of difficulty, trauma, panic and extreme stress. However, these defenses sometimes become prohibitive and stop us from personal growth.

My goal is to assist you in learning healthy coping skills to manage these symptoms but to also explore the root cause of them in an effort to reduce them. We’ll take a look at how unresolved issues of our past can leak into our present functioning and work together to identify patterns of behavior and make effective change.

EXPERIENCE

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of New York and hold a post-graduate certification in Object Relations Psychotherapy from the International Psychotherapy Institute. I worked in an outpatient rehabilitation program for six years working with individuals with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders. I currently serve as a local youth council’s Program Director, providing youth and families with the necessary tools for social-emotional growth, healthy attachments and prosocial behaviors, as well as supervise a team of licensed social workers. I have also been in private practice for three years.

“Sometimes in their pain, people believe that the agony will last forever. But feelings are actually more like weather systems—they blow in and they blow out. Just because you feel sad this minute or this hour or this day doesn’t mean you’ll feel that way in ten minutes or this afternoon or next week. Everything you feel—anxiety, elation, anguish—blows in and out again.” Lori Gottlieb

PROCESS

To get started, please call or email to set up a brief phone consultation to determine if I am a right fit and can meet your identified needs. We will schedule an intake appointment (approx. 60 minutes) where I will gather some background information and begin our work together. Afterwards, we will schedule weekly sessions (usually 45 or 60 minutes) on a day and time that works for both of us.
